Since 2018, the International Development Research Center (IDRC, Canada), the University of San Carlos, Guatemala (USAC), the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and the Mundo Sano Foundation (FMS), have come together under the leadership of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in Guatemala to carry out the Alliances Project for the Elimination of Chagas in Central America, starting with Guatemala.
With a comprehensive approach which integrates primary and secondary prevention components, the project’s general objective is to contribute to eliminating Chagas disease as a public health problem in the geographic location of highest transmission (“hotspot”) in Guatemala. In addition, work is being done to generate evidence that supports the elimination of Chagas disease as a public health problem in other hotspots in the region.
